CONTROL LOOP

Basic System Operating Principles

The components of BST web guiding systems perform together on the line as a "control loop":

• The starting point is the current position of the web.
• One or more sensors record the actual position of the web and send the relevant information to the commander.
• The commander compares the actual position to the specified value. If there is a difference it sends a proportional correction signal to the actuator.
• The actuator corrects the position of the web via the guiding device.

COMMANDERS

Introducing the ekr Pro family - the latest generation of web guiding controllers from BST. Flexible and more versatile than ever in a compact package, the ekr Pro familiy is engineered for higher performance in tough applications. Based on the CAN bus protocol, the ekr Pro family allows communication with all off the shelf equipment and systems supporting the CANopen protocol.

The compact size allows these new controllers to be fitted directly on or in the guiding device. LED indicators show the operating staus of the controller at all times.

Used for
• edge guiding
• center-line guiding
• guiding to a printed line or edge

The new ekr Pro family included our unique “watchdog” function, that actually prevents waste on slitters! They can be directly connected to our complete range of actuators, with or without position feedback.

ekrPro Com 60
BST’s newest addition to it’s family of web guiding devices provide superior performance, maximum versatility and optimal network connectivity, yet remain the easiest to use web guiding devices made.

Sporting compact size and smart looks, the ekrPro Com 60 was designed for simple integration and use over a wide range of printing, converting, tire and OEM applications.

The ekrPro Com 60 uses a unique new operator interface which combines color coded icons for simplicity and an LCD dot matrix display, which has data output which is both numeric and graphic. The system also features message output that is multi-langual.

The ekrPro Com 60 controller is available in both stand alone or panel mount units, providing the greatest flexibility for integration on OEM machines.

The ekrPro Com 60 can be used with a wide range of input devices – line, contrast and edge sensors, as well as CCD Pro cameras, automatic servo center and FVG automatic edge seeking devices, and remote control inputs. It’s extreme application flexibility is further reinforced by the large range of output devices it supports - actuators (with or without position feedback loops), hydraulic servo valves, digital and relay outputs.

Network connections are done with plug-in gateway to other architectures. Possibly the most exciting and innovative new feature to be integrated into web guiding systems in years, is the ekrPro Com 60’s plug and play internal logic.

Among other things, it means our system gives the abitilty to compensate variable gain and phase-lag requiring a web speed signal from the machine. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities - solving complicated web guiding application problems or providing automated closed loop machine feedback, in a simple, cost effective solution.

EKR 3000
Combination commander with remote control.
Combining push button simplicity with profibus technology means that you can finally put the web guide interface where the operator needs it. But that is just the beginning of the design freedom given by the EKR3000. Advanced architecture allows the guiding system to be easily integrated into press controls, consoles, CPU's. Supports our entire range of sensors.

Ideal for accurate guiding of :

• a web edge or to a center line
• continuous or interrupted lines
• edge lines of print or contrasts
• scorings or embossings

SENSORS

The Optimum System for Any Material

• Our sensors accurately detect the position of a running web according to selected features such as web edge or web center-line.
• We offer a variety of sensing systems for assorted materials.

Ultrasonic sensors
• Dirty or dusty environments
• Plastic film with changing transparency
• Light-sensitive materials
- Explosion-proof environments
- Clear film where print approaches the very edge

WEB WIDTH MEASUREMENT SYSTEM

Introducing the ekr Pro System, a process management system capable of complex automated applications such as web width measurement, splice control and tire manufacturing. The CCDPRO system was designed for use on extruders, laminators, slitters, printing machines and a wide range of converting machinery.

The system integrates the ekr PRO Com family of controllers, a new CCD Pro sensor, Pro Logic logic module anda new ProTouch touch screen user interface.

The CCD Pro sensorfeatures programmable detection of up to 8 web edges and has an LCD dot matrix display of multiple system sensor signals and settings.

The CCD Pro can be used on applications where web width changes frequently, and -by automatic sensing of and adjusting to changing web widths - will save operator time by eliminating the need to re-adjust edge sensors. The system is also ideal for chase and follow applications involving multiple webs or materials.

PRO Logic is an advanced system of expandable “plug and play” logic modules, which allows for the customization of software to application specific needs. The system provides for fast bidirectional data exchange between BST components and a user’s PLC or PC. PRO Logic is capable of managing up to 16 ekrPro or CCDPro cameras in a single system. PRO Logic can be used as Bus-Gateway between the BST Bus and Ethernet. Data exchange between multiple clients is possible with any device providing the UDP protocol on EtherNet. Such a system allows ready access to all enabled BST Process data from the user or OEM’s Windows® applications, by use of a BST software interface.

BST’s new Pro Touch is a programmable touch screen graphic user interface capable of controlling one or more control systems from a single location or work station, greatly simplifying operation of complex systems employing mulitple guiding devices.

CCD Pro, ProTouch and Pro Logic were designed for useas a system, for example, providing automatic web width measurement on extruders, or for automatic splice control. The system provides continuous graphic display of the actual web width, programmable warning and error messages and digital outputs. When integrated with an extruder the system can provide a complete closed loop web width measurement and control system.

NETWORKING

Internal Networks
Networking has never been easier, than with the new ekr Pro family of guiding devices. Networking ekr Pro Com, ekr Pro Net and ekr Pro key units allows central operation of many devices from a single controller or keyboard. The desired control device is selected simply by its address in the network.

External Networks
Because all controllers in the ekrPro family use a serial CANbus interface, they can also be connected to higher level systems such as PLC’s or PC’s, or to different bus systems via a BST interface. The CAN bus system guarantees secure, rapid data transfer, as well as integration into any engineered control system.
